This is a contemporary Tengu Mask Ojime Bead, inspired by an antique Japanese sliding bead (which was worn on the cord of an inro box suspended from a obi waist sash) and hand carved in boxwood by a Chinese Master-Carver. Tengu is a kind of yōkai (supernatural being) or kami (god or spirit), often depicted with human, monkey, and avian characteristics including a red face and a long nose. In Shinto belief, he is the deity who is said to shed light on Heaven and Earth as a messenger. In Buddhist belief, he is a protective, though dangerous, spirit of the mountains and forests. He is often portrayed in a mask worn by dancers at festivals and by performers in Noh and Kyogen Theater. The dai-tengu is often shown with a long nose, which symbolizes his supernatural insight or spiritual prowess; a wide mouth; and a six-sided hat on a cord (part of his garb as a yamabushi or mountain ascetic). This ojime bead measures 1.625" high by 1.25" wide by 1.25" deep. On the back, there is a carved form with a 0.125" hole for attachement and the carver's signature. The carver's name is unknown. This Tengu Mask Ojime Bead is in Very Good condition and appears never to have been used.
