This is a 4.125" by 2.5" sepia-toned 19th Century Carte de Visite of a Young Woman with Ringlets by S.C. Abbott of Herkimer, NY. Sylvester C. Abbott (1831-1915) was one of five brothers who were New York State photographers. There are records of him as a daguerreian with his brother, J.H. Abbott, in Hamilton, NY in 1855 and of him working with his brother William H. Abbott in Little Falls, NY until 1864. From 1860 to 1868, he operated a gallery in Herkimer, NY. He eventually migrated to Illinois and, then, Minnesota, where he died. This is a wonderful portrait of a beautiful young woman with an elaborate hairstyle and a double-breasted and bowed dress embellished with ab oval gold pin and thick chain. She is shown in three-quarter view with her gaze off to the right of the photograph. The photo has been re-photographed inside a dark speckled oval mat and glued to a pale orange card with a thin gold line border. The back reads: "S. C. Abbott, Photographer Herkimer, N.Y." This 19th Century Carte de Visite of a Young Woman with Ringlets by S.C. Abbott of Herkimer, NY is in Very Good condition with no damage or wear.
