These are the 1956 End Papers from Oedipus the King, the tragedy by Sophocles, with wood engravings by Demetrios Galanis. Demetrios Galanis (1879-1966) was a 20th century Greek artist, who exhibited alongside Braque, Matisee, Juan Gris, Dufy, and Chagall. He painted both landscapes and figures but gained greatest critical acclaim for his love of the human form. Each measuring 10.25" high by 6.5" wide, these end paper form a continuous scene from the play with a thoughtful Oedipus and Jocasta, his mother seated on one page and a standing, pointing blind Tiresias with a male Greek chorus behind him on the other. The images are printed in terracotta and black on a white background which has slightly yellowed. These 1956 End Papers from Oedipus the King are in Very Good condition with no tears or damage. There is a small stain on the bottom edge of the left hand page. Wonderful for use in collage or other art project.
