This item consists of eight 1870s Portrait Engravings from Lives of the Queens of England, written by Agnes Strickland and published James Miller, N.Y. Agnes Strickland (1796-1874) was an English historical writer and poet, known for the 12 volume set of lives of the queens of England which she created with her sister Elizabeth and where they pioneered the field of manuscript research. Rendered in exquisite detail (including the shimmer of the pearls and jewels; the patterns and folds of the richly decorative fabrics and laces; the hairs of the furs and the barbs of the feathers), these black and white portraits are of: Queen Elizabeth; Anne of Denmark: Mary, First Queen Regent; Henrietta Maria; Queen Anne; Margaret of Anjou; Philippa; and Catherine of Braganza. Each image measures 4" x 3" and has been printed on a 8" x 5" medium weight off-white paper. The name of the queen is written in cursive. The sources of the portraits and the engraver are unknown. These 1870s Portrait Engravings of the Queens of England are in Very Good condition with no damage or wear to the engravings. The portrait of Queen Anne has a small water stain in the bottom right corner of the border.
