This item consists of 4 Small Nickel Silver Ethiopian Coptic Crosses, three measuring 1.75" (45mm) by 0.875" (22mm) and one measuring 1.5" (38mm) by 0.75" (19mm). These crosses have been cast in nickel silver using the lost wax method and hand etched with a variety of intersecting lines. Their geometric patterns have religious or talismanic meanings. Designs also vary according to the characteristics of different Ethiopian regions and their local symbolism. All of these crosses have a top circle with a cross formed by openwork areas. Three are nearly identical with a latticework collar (referring to everlasting life) above a bottom "point" incised with a slightly different cross on either side. The fourth cross has an openwork cross inside a gear-like circle and is identical on both sides. Traditionally, these crosses would be worn around the neck on a deep blue cotton cord. Region of origin, age and maker are unknown. These Small Nickel Silver Ethiopian Coptic Crosses are in Very Good condition with no damage or wear.
