This is a 1998 hard cover first edition of Chris Raschka's children's book, Arlene Sardine. The book follows the short life of Arlene the fish from brisling in a fjord to canned sardine with eleven of her very best friends from school. Along the way, she is caught, iced, sorted, smoked, covered in olive oil, and cooked. Raschka's message was described by Publishers Weekly as uplifting, where "death is a regenerative part of the life cycle." The book is filled with beautiful sea-colored watercolor illustrations, marked by swoops and swirls. The dust jacket has been designed to look like a sardine can. This copy of Arlene Sardine is in very good condition with some edge damage to the dust jacket at the top of the spine.
