These are 1927 End Papers Illustrated by Maud and Miska Petersham from Nursery Friends from France, written by Olive Beaupré Miller and published by The Book House for Children. Maud and Miska Petersham were American writers and illustrators who helped set the direction for the illustrated children's books we know today. The worked in partnership for over five decades, producing more than 120 trade and textbooks, anthologies, and picture books. They are known for technical excellence, exuberant color, and the introduction of international folk and modernist themes. These end papers, each measuring 11.125" high by 7.875" wide, show a continuous map of France (with the area missing where for the spine of the book) edged by an Atlantic Ocean filled with sailing ships and whimsical sea creatures. The map contains illustrations of French people throughout time, dressed in clothes of the age; snow-capped mountains; classic castles and cathedrals; animals; and regional fruits and vegetables. There is a compass rose in the lower left hand corner; a bright sun in the middle of the right side; and a border of animals, including medieval hybrids; flowers; fleur-de-lis.
