This is the 1905 Front Cover from At the Sign of the Jack-o-Lantern by Myrtle Reed. The cover was designed by Margaret Armstrong (1867-1944) -- an innovative and bold designer, editor, botanist, adventurer and author -- for the Myrtle Reed series (1899-1913). This series used white and pink inks, gold and silver tooling on lavender book cloth, and traditional design motifs. Here, she has created a literal sign (which houses the title and author's name) which is attached to an elaborate gold sign holder. There is a gold dot and dash border on the top and the bottom of the cover. An art nouveau floral design has been embossed into the background with the images emerging as the cover is tilted and catches the light. This cover measures 8.125" high by 5.125" wide. On back, the end paper is off-white which has yellowed over time. This 1905 Front Cover from At the Sign of the Jack-o-Lantern is in Fair condition. It appears that the lavender colored book cloth has faded to a light blue gray and has been lstained over the years. The top right corner has been dented and the edges have minor wear. Ideal for use in art.
