This is a 6.5" x 4.25" sepia-toned 1890s Cabinet Card of Two Children Before a Castle Backdrop taken by artistic photographer Louis Roth of St. Louis, MO. The photograph shows a young boy and a baby on what appears to be grass in front of a low fence and a castle backdrop. There is a basket of flowers between them. The boy is wearing a ruffled white blouse with a large plaid bow, wool shorts, and wool socks. He is holding what looks to be a riding crop in his right hand. The baby, dressed in a white lace gown and dark high button shoes, is pointing at the photographer with the left hand. Both children look away from the camera. The front is marked "Roth" (inside an artist's palette") and "2006 S. Broadway St. Louis." The back has the same information with a cameo of a woman in profile on a palm frond. The bottom reads "1893. First Premium awarded at the St. Louis Fair 1893." Louis Roth was born in 1858 and is listed as working in St. Louis as a photographer from about 1880 to 1910. It is not known whether he retired or worked in another photographer's studio after this time. This 1890s Cabinet Card of Two Children Before a Castle Backdrop is in Good condition. There is some slight wear to the photograph and minor staining to the card.
