This 10" by 7" retablo on tin shows a classic image of Saint Jerome as the hermit in the wilderness who is accompanied by a lion with a human face and who is seen kneeling and holding his hand over a bleeding hole in his chest. He also has his other attributes: the crucifix (symbol of his penitence), the book (symbol of his scholarship), and the horn directed towards his ear, signifying the final trumpet of judgment. He is the patron saint of philosophers, librarians and scholars. He is also sought for protection against temptation and want. Artist and age of the painting are unknown. In good condition with some surface wear, rippled edges, and top hole.
