This Ethiopian Coptic cross pendant measures 2.25" (57 mm) long by 1.9375" (49 mm) wide. It appears to have been cast in nickel silver, using the lost wax method, and then hand etched with traditional geometric designs, which are either religious or talismanic. Designs vary according to the characteristics of different Ethiopians regions and their local symbolism. Here, the square encircling the cross represents the Ark of the Covenant, while the multiple dotted circles are eyes which ward off the evil eye. These elements with slight variations can be seen on each side of the cross. Region of origin, exact age and silver content are unknown. In very good condition with a beautiful patina of age and minor surface wear from use.
